In August of 2016, Gary, LaNita, Bryson, Holly and Kennedy Adkison and Ryan, Brittany, Beckham and Britton King were vacationing in their favorite summer retreat, Silverton, Colorado. The family typically spent their vacation time riding ATVs in the mountains of Silverton and enjoying the beautiful landscape while escaping the scorching Texas heat.

One evening, as the family was eating dinner, several of them decided to take advantage of the rest of the evening and go for a ride to check out a road going out of the town of Silverton. Holly and Brittany had already showered and given the kids baths, so they decided to stay in. Bryson and LaNita had already showered too due to a rainy, cold day of riding, but they decided to go ahead and go with Gary and Ryan to see the ski-lift road going out of Silverton. They told Holly and Brittany they would be right back after checking out a possible ride for the next day. 

After several hours of being gone and darkness arriving, Holly and Brittany were notified of the awful tragedy that had occurred that would leave them widows to raise their young children alone. Soon after leaving, Gary, Ryan, Bryson and LaNita started up the road that lead to the ski-lift, when their transmission went out. Since darkness was approaching, they had no cell-service and they weren't far from the main road, they decided to coast down the mountain to the level road and get help to get back to the campground. Soon after beginning their descent down the mountain, they lost all brake-power and quickly began to speed down the mountain. When almost to the bottom, they came to a curve that the ATV wouldn't take at such a speed and went off the mountain. 

The accident took Ryan and Bryson's lives. Gary was left with numerous injuries including surgery to create a plate for his crushed ribs and surgery for his collapsed lung. He stayed in ICU several days to recover from his injuries. LaNita survived with many life-threatening injuries: a broken neck, broken ribs, a lacerated spleen and liver, collapsed lungs, a fractured skull and a severely broken ankle.

The services for Ryan and Bryson had to wait several weeks for Gary and LaNita to be able to attend.
